As part of Melbourne Design Week 2019, Modern Times is presenting Material Thought, an exhibition of contemporary furniture, lighting and objects by some of Australia’s most innovative and creative designers. Discover new work by Steelotto, Nicolette Johnson, Christopher Boots, Henry Wilson, Ebony Heidenreich, Maddie Sharrock, Studio ac-s, Alterfact and Coco Flip.
The theme of Melbourne Design Week is Design Experiments – ‘How can design shape the future?’. Every choice a designer makes has an impact on the future. Material Thought investigates each designers materials and explores some of the history, constraints and implications of these decisions.
Material Thought highlights include Maddie Sharrock’s Snake Head seat made from a unique combination of polystyrene, polyurethane, polymer cement and concrete (recently acquired by the NGV Contemporary Design and Architecture Collection) and the launch of Honey, a new lighting collection from Coco Flip taking cues from the humble honey dipper’s soft curves and classic geometry made from slip-cast ceramic stoneware and American White Ash timber.
